Wisdom teeth

‘Wisdom teeth’ or ‘third molars’ are the last adult Molar teeth to develop and appear. They are usually completely developed at young adult stage, generally appearing between the ages of 17-21 (when we are supposedly on the path to ‘wisdom’).

In most people there is not enough space for these teeth to emerge and they develop what is called a ‘wisdom tooth impaction’. These can be totally asymptomatic but in many cases trap plaque and food, and over time can become infected and painful, or can give rise to a cavity in the neighbouring molar.

Why the lounge?

Tamar Dental Lounge, Launceston has the expertise to manage any wisdom tooth problems.

Dr. Chris Jacobs can deal with your ‘third molar’ enquiry and can carry out the procedure in the dental chair or when necessary or required, complete the treatment under General Anaesthetic at St. Vincent’s hospital.

It is important to be prepared for a third molar consultation and we normally arrange for the patient to have a Panoramic Dental Radiograph of the head and jaw taken before the consultation.
