Chris Jacobs

Founder, Dental Implantologist

Dr Chris Jacobs is the owner and founder of Tamar Dental Lounge, Launceston, previously known as Tamar Dental.  Originally established over 30 years ago, Dr Jacobs joined the practice in 2011 and took over as the new principal dentist.

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Dr Jacobs attended university at the prestigious Stellenbosch University, near Cape Town, where he completed his degree in dentistry.

Dr. Jacobs’ enduring commitment to social welfare is exemplified by his unwavering dedication to his community. Over the years he has generously volunteered his expertise working with numerous community dental initiatives. His unique journey includes; working from a stationary train in the Western Cape to address the dental health needs of impoverished and underserved populations; a transformative year of community service as a dentist in Cape Town; and fine-tuning his skills in a clinic in Mossel Bay, dedicating another year to providing essential dental care to disadvantaged communities. He then opened his own private practice in the picturesque city of George. 

Committed to advancing his expertise, he achieved a postgraduate diploma in dental implantology and passed rigorous examinations in head and neck anatomy and oral pathology at the postgraduate level.

In 2007 he immigrated to Launceston with his family working for Oral Health Services of Tasmania in Launceston as part of the public sector workforce scheme.

As a general dentist, Dr Jacobs has an extended skillset within in a broad range of dentistry including; preventative dentistry, aesthetic dentistry, corrective dental treatment and treatment for snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.  His dedication shines through in his passion for paediatric dentistry, where his gentle approach and skilled care make dental visits a positive experience for young patients.  He also has a special interest in dental surgery (including dental implantology) employing state-of-the-art restorative techniques, and his proficiency in dentoalveolar surgery, especially in the precise extraction of wisdom teeth, is a testament to his meticulous surgical skill.

Dr Jacobs thrives in a team environment and believes that working together to create an inviting and approachable space for patients is a priority for his whole team.

Outside of the dental practice Chris also lives a busy and active life with a love of sports, particularly athletics, cricket, and rugby union, but also has a passion for drawing and painting portraits.

Karen Lam

Oral Health Therapist (OHT)

Is anxiety preventing you from visiting the dentist? Our specialist, Karen, provides compassionate care to ease your fears and promote a positive dental experience. Karen is our in-house Oral Health Therapist (OHT).  With over 10 years of experience, she is trained to expertly examine your mouth.  She can perform dental check-ups, x-rays, fillings, teeth scale/cleans, perform gum health assessments and manage gum disease. She is also amazing at whitening teeth.

Oral Health Therapists are also experts at looking after the little people in our lives. From first dental visits to fillings, stainless steel crowns and extractions, Karen will ensure the appointment is a stress-free and fun experience for you and your child.

Karen was born and raised in Adelaide and completed her Bachelor of Oral Health with a final year prize in 2012 at the University of Adelaide. She also attained her Adult Restorative qualifications at the University of Sydney in June 2023. Karen has spent 9 years working in Perth, WA and the remote town of Streaky Bay in South Australia before deciding she needed a sea change and moved to Tasmania. She is currently the Tasmania State Chair for the Dental Hygienist Association of Australia.

Karen is a friendly oral health therapist who is very passionate about preventive dentistry and promoting dental and oral health wellness. She is an empathetic dental clinician and has worked as a volunteer OHT for refugee, homeless and other disadvantaged patients in Western Australia and rural remote Queensland. She helps patients feel at ease with her calm and gentle manner and is committed to providing the most up-to-date and best standard of care for her patients. Karen is a lifelong learner and continues her professional development through attending courses and conferences each year.

Outside of dentistry, Karen is a gym enthusiast, nature and animal lover who appreciates music, art and exploring new places.
